Challenge/Problem:

Food is an essential part of daily living. It is something we have to constantly be replenishing on a weekly basis. When anyone goes to the grocery store to buy food, they usually bring some form of a list with them to make sure they get the most important items.

However, there are many little inconveniences that come with making or using a grocery list. These can range from having to write every single item on a piece of paper to constantly having to make sure each item that is found is marked off.

To solve this issue, I set out to create a mobile app that would allow a user to efficiently categorize what kinds of food items they are looking for and check each item off when it is found.

Research/Features:

Before I started to sketch anything, I did some research online to see what are the most important components of a grocery list. After some quick google searches, I then did a little competitive analysis on any current grocery apps that are already out there. The app I mainly looked at was List Ease.

When it came to features for this app, I thought about what are the most important factors that go into making a grocery list.

What I came up with was:

  • A section that allows the usr to put in the items they need, while also allowing them to organize them by certain categories.

  • A store locator, which will help a user find the closest store to them.

  • A section for the user to set up a budget, so they can keep track of how much they may be spending.

  • Being able to share the list with friends and family, if for whatever reason the user is currently unable to go to the grocery store but already has a list made.

User Flow/Sketch:

After doing my research, I drew a quick user flow to get an idea of how I wanted my Grocery App to play out. When drawing this out, I was trying to see how I could organize the most important features of this app (store locator, create a list, share and budget.).

Tool/Aesthetic:

The tool I decided to use to design this app was Adobe XD; the main reason for choosing this tool is because of the icon plug-in feature it has, which allowed me to select a variety of icons to use.

For the aesthetic of this app, I wanted to give it a color palette that felt very “grocery-esque” to me. Those colors ended up being green, orange, white and a little bit of red. These colors reminded me produce like carrots, broccoli and eggs (food one may commonly see on a grocery list)

Next Steps:

  • Conduct some usability tests.

  • Do some further competitive research on other grocery apps.

  • See if I can add any additional features.
